If I could get some help in three areas, I'd be so happy:

(1) Contact with the bit: I dont' know if I should have a loose rein, light contact, or medium contact.

(2) Gait: he does nice and smooth slowly, but as I ask him to increase his speed, he tends to rack, then trot.

(3) Canter: he gets excited when I ask...

But, when one rear leg is lifted, the other goes almost horizontal. He only has mild desmites in the medial aspect of one leg. This has not changed in the year I have had him. He does not have any active inflammation (no heat in either the cannon or fetlock area) No lameness. He does have intermittant UPF which is controlled - Have him on Cetyl M.
Has anyone tried to use Training Shackles to break a horse from pacing? I have a four year old gelding that only wants to pace (he didn't make it on pads), most of the time he is doing a stepping pace that isn't that rough but it isn't the smooth running walk that i am used to. I have worked him up hills and over poles. I have even tried riding him through tall grass and nothing seems to break it.

I recently bought a 20 year old gelding racking horse. His gaits are the worst I've ever felt. People will watch us ride and tell us he's gaiting yet I feel like we're trotting. I do not think we're pacing. I've tried collecting him up and riding on a tight rein but all it seems to do is slow him down and he starts to do this weird prance which is still bouncy and uncomfortable, he also seems confused when I urge him forward. When I ride on a loose rein, he's very bouncy and he does this...
