Are there any grulla walking horses? I was at a buckskin show this weekend and saw quite a few grulla qtr horses and was just wondering if anyone knows of any walkers that are that color. They look like silver buckskins.

Grulla is another name for black dun. It is a black horse with the dun gene. Until someone can prove to me the dun gene is present in purebred TWH's, I don't believe there can be any grulla TWH's.

Ms.Meower- There is a registered tennessee walking horse mare that is a red dun, named I'm Dun Gone. If you don't believe me, you can pick up a April 2006 issue of the Voice magazine, and turn to page 98 and 99. The paragraph is actually on page 99, at the very top right paragraph. So, in my opinion, it is possible that we can have grulla walking horses, especially if all it is is a black horse with the dun gene. We had a grade purebred twh gelding a couple years ago that was born a dun, but later turned a blood bay color but he still has the dorsal stripe and some zebra stripes on his back legs, but he doesn't have the stripes on the shoulders or on the front legs.

We have two tobiano grulla SSH's. One is a mare and one is her colt from this year. He has also tested homozygous tobiano as well as homozygous black. We are very excited about him.

If you look close at my avitar, you will see a Registered TWH/SSH/RH that is a TRUE GRULLA DUN (with dorsal stripe & all) SPOTTED WALKING/SADDLE/RACKING HORSE. He has alot of Handshaker blood. He stands 16.3 hands tall. He is truly gorgeous!!! After he has been in a stall for a month, he turns almost a silverish-blue-like color. A true one-of-a-kind horse. It is the only one that I, or anyone that I have ever talkied to, have ever seen. |

I wikied the horse colors, heres one thing it said. A grullo horse is a dun with a black base, rarer than red duns or bay (classic) duns. Only 0.7% of quarter
horses registered each year with the AQHA are grullo. There are several variations of grullo, informally referred to as black dun, blue dun, slate grullo,
silver grullo, silver dun, or lobo dun. However, all of these shades are genetically based on the same thing; the dun gene on top of a black gene."
Here's another thing "The word grullo originates from the Spanish word "grulla", which refers to a slate-gray crane. Because of the Spanish origin of the name, some people will refer to a mare as a grulla and a stallion as a grullo, pronounced "grew-ya" and "grew-yo" respectively." "The most obvious way to tell a grullo is not only the gray or tan-gray shading, but also its primitive markings, which include some or all of the following: dark face; cobwebbing around the eyes and forehead; dark mottling on the body; leg barring (sometimes called tiger striping); dark ear tips and edging; dark ear barring; dark shadowing of the neck; dark dorsal and transverse striping; dark mane and tail guard hairs." |
