Breeding Roans |

I have been told that it is not good to breed two roans to each other, that it is a fatal gene. I have read that it is a myth but hasn't been proven. I was wondering if any of you guys have any experience breeding roans to roans?

The only thing that I know of that produces anything lethal is breeding two overo's together, it produces the lethal white gene and the foals die. I don't think it would hurt to breed two roans together.

This site has some great information regarding the lethal gene topic:

A horse that is RnRn is homozygous for the roan gene, and it will probably die in utero since roan is usually lethal in its homozygous dominant form. It also
had to come from two roan parents, which would be a very risky pairing that most breeders probably would never attempt.

Hmmmmmm, interesting, I was with Cheryl on that one.... I thought it was overo to overo....... I've never heard of roan to roan (not sabinos but true
roans) having this issue. I will have to check that out.

I heard this too, about Rn to Rn. But like the prev poster said, most die in utero and don't come out and suffer like an OLWS foal does.

Is there any genetic expert that could help us out on this? I would like to know also. I have never heard this about roane horses.
