How is everyone dealing with the summer heat so far? 
It sure has changed my barn schedule. I've gone from knocking the barn doors down as soon as 5:00 hits, to finding housework to do until around 8:00 when
the heat lets up a little. The stall fans are going full blast, but we still have to peal our soaking wet clothes off like fly paper. This is the time of the
year when our horses develop excellent night vision as we try to ride after dark. Plus we are going through salt bricks like they were peppermints!

same here started riding later and later and it seems the hotter it gets the worse the flys get

Yeah, it's hot here too...but I spread out my fly predators a few weeks ago and have already seen a decrease in the amount of flies. I just came back from my noontime check on everybody and just said to myself that the flies are less. You should look into them - they are very economical. |

weve had the fly predators and they really didnt seem to work but since we started using this new spray for the stalls and wash racks it seems to have really
killed the flys

i too am now riding in the dark. i even thought about getting one of those lights that i can hook on a ball cap so i can see where i'm going. thank
goodness our next show is several weeks away but i still have to work them to build up thier stamina and mine! i put up 3 really big powerful fans overhead and
when you go in the stall hang on, they are POWERFUL enough to blow off any remaining flies on them. and i'm so happy i have my little round pen covered, i
wet it down and that really cools it off so if i'm doing ground work at least i do have some shade :)

Has anyone ever seen the ziploc bags stapled to the hallway rafters in a barn? My old employer hired a Mexican man and he filled the ziploc bags with plain tap
water and stapled them to the hallway rafters. The flies were no where to be found! We copied the idea, and where there is spilled grain in the hall that used
to be swarming with flies...not a one can be found now. The Mexican didn't know (or couldn't explain for us to comprehend) why it works, but my guess
is the way all their numerous eyes perceive the bags of water. Might want to try it, you're certainly not out a lot of money!

LOL i did that about 3 years ago and i think it worked a little. i can't remember why it worked either.

They think it's hornets nest or something or so I was told. It didn't really work for us. Sure, they stayed away from the bag.............but not too
far from it.

You know, most of the bug zappers that I've seen the outside screen is too small for horse flys to get to the part that electrocutes the smaller bugs.
I've been thinking about getting one and cutting bigger holes in ti just to hear those horse flys fry.

Be careful Greg! Sounds dangerous, but there's nothing more rewarding than hearing a good fat bug fry on the bug zapper. Grab a cold one or two and time
the bugs frying...I think our highest is 8.3 seconds!

We live in cattle country so flies are real bad here. I spay my brood mares good with Endure and put fly mask on. They seem to do real well. The Endure keeps
ticks off also which are real bad here.
I also try to muck my stalls early in the morning and then again in the evening so the flies will not be bad, so far they are not bad in my barn. I only have 4 horses right now, two in the barn and two out side so it is not hard to clean stalls twice a day. Which I bring the brood mare in at night. I guess I'm lucky I have lights at my ring, so far I've not used them this year. But it looks like me may be using them next week the temps are suppose to go back up. Looking a lot like last year. |
