A ride in time through the history of Big South Fork
4 days, 3 nights
October 10, 11, 12, 13, 2008
Join us as we ride the history of the Big South Fork. Four days and three nights through the last wilderness area in the southeast.
Saddle Valley invites you to ride the trails and hear and live the history as told by legendary trail guide, and descendant of Jonathon Blevins, Paul King, as he guides us along Station Camp Creek, north along the river into Kentucky and to Blue Heron, then back by way of Station Camp
You enjoy the ride and scenery, we do all the work! Each day we will ride out of camp with a full day ahead of us.. While we ride, camp will be packed up and moved to our next night's campsite. When we ride into camp that afternoon, supper will be waiting on the fire! We will take care of the details, while you sit back and relax. You will need to care for your own horse, but we will have a wrangler on hand to help take care of them, and to be with the horses all night. Riders will need to bring a small dome tent, good for two, and their own sleeping bag, or bedroll, and a duffel type bag with clothes , also any adult beverages you may want, should be put in a cooler with your name on it. We will transport these items along with feed and hay.
THE RIDE
We will leave Saddle Valley, Friday morning, 9:00 am. We will ride over to Fork Ridge road, to Charit Creek, then down Station Camp Creek to the river, then head north along the west side up to Big Island, and out of the gorge up to Bell Farm in Daniel Boone the first night. Saturday we will ride from Bell farm along Laurel Hill to the horse trail access at Dick Gap overlook, then back down into the gorge and cross the river at Blue Heron. We will stop for a short tour and history of the mining operations, and the Barthell mining camp, just up the tracks from Blue Heron. from there we head to Bear Creek Horse camp for Saturday night, a hot bath at the bath house, and some good food around the fire. Sunday we'll ride back south along the east side of the river to Station Camp east, and a night by the river. Monday we'll head back to Saddle Valley by way of the Bandy Creek visitors center to learn what the National Park Service has done for us, and plans to do over the next 15-20 years. Along the way we will meet and talk to some very interesting people. The spirits of many of the area's past inhabitants still walk the creeks and ridges, with stories never heard before, or told over and over by generations of ancient peoples.
Learn of how the Coal and lumber companies came through and ravaged the land, but provided a living, meager as it was, for the local people.
